Etsy Shop Setup Guide 2026: Step by Step for New Sellers

Our Etsy shop setup guide walks you through every screen: preferences, shop name, payments, setup fee, ID check, 2FA, storefront and first listings.

By Stallion's TeamReviewed by Rabeel Minhas~11 min read

In short: This Etsy shop setup guide covers the whole process in order. On a desktop browser, go to etsy.com/sell and select Get started. Choose your shop language, country and currency, pick a shop name, connect a bank account and a card, approve the one-time setup fee shown under "Total due now", verify your ID with a selfie and turn on two-factor authentication. Add at least one listing, then open the shop and finish your storefront, policies and first listings before you promote it.

Last updated: 27 October 2026. Steps checked against Etsy Help's How to Open an Etsy Shop, Etsy's Fees & Payments Policy and Etsy's Creativity Standards.

Etsy's setup screens are quick to click through, which is part of the problem. A few choices you make in the first hour, such as your shop language and currency, are hard or impossible to change later, and a shop that opens with thin listings and blank policies struggles to win its first buyers. If you're a new seller in the USA or anywhere else and want to set up an Etsy shop once, and properly, this is for you. We'll explain each screen, what to decide before you reach it, and what to finish afterwards.

What do you need before you set up an Etsy shop?

Gather everything first. Stopping halfway to find a bank statement or a photo of your ID is where most setups stall.

  • A desktop or laptop with a web browser. Etsy asks you to set up the shop on the web. You can manage it from the Etsy Seller app once it's open.
  • An Etsy account. If you already buy on Etsy, you can use the same account.
  • A bank account in a country where Etsy Payments is available, so Etsy can pay out your sales.
  • A debit or credit card for Etsy's bills, such as listing fees, ads and the setup fee.
  • A valid government ID in the same name as your bank account, plus a phone or webcam for a selfie.
  • A phone or authenticator app for two-factor authentication.
  • Two or three shop name options in case your first choice is taken.
  • At least one finished listing: photos, title, description, price and shipping details.

It also helps to know what you're going to sell and roughly what you'll charge. If you're still deciding, read our guide on how to sell on Etsy first, then come back here.

How do you set up an Etsy shop step by step?

Here's the order Etsy walks you through, with the decision that matters at each step.

Eight steps to open an Etsy shop, from etsy.com/sell to first listing
The eight setup steps Etsy walks you through, in order.

Step 1: Start from etsy.com/sell

Sign in to your Etsy account on a desktop browser, go to etsy.com/sell and select Get started. Setup goes fastest in one sitting with everything from the list above on your desk.

Step 2: Set your shop preferences

Choose your shop language, your country and your shop currency.

  • Language: pick the language you'll write listings and answer buyers in. Etsy doesn't let you change the shop language later.
  • Country: the country you sell from. It affects which payment and tax rules apply to you.
  • Currency: the currency your prices are set in. If it differs from your bank account's currency, Etsy charges a 2.5% currency conversion fee on your sales. Matching the two avoids that fee.

Step 3: Choose your shop name

Etsy's rules are simple: 4 to 20 characters, no spaces or special characters, no profanity, not already in use and not someone else's trademark. You can change the name after the shop opens, but returning buyers and anyone you've shared your link with will know you by the first one, so choose with care. Our guide to Etsy shop name ideas has a full method for picking and checking a name.

Step 4: Connect payments and billing

Tell Etsy where your bank is located and whether you sell as an individual (sole proprietorship) or an incorporated business. Then add your bank details for payouts and a card for Etsy bills. Most new sellers start as individuals. You don't need an LLC or a registered business to open a shop.

Step 5: Approve the setup fee

Etsy may charge a one-time, non-refundable setup fee. The amount depends on where you are, and you see it under "Total due now" before you confirm. If you onboard through Payoneer, it's charged in US dollars, and taxes may apply. Our Etsy shop setup fee guide covers this charge in detail.

Step 6: Verify your identity

Etsy uses a partner called Persona to check a photo of your government ID against a selfie. The name on the ID must match the name on your bank account. You can choose Express verification, which uses biometric matching, or Manual review. If the names don't match, fix that before you start. It's the most common reason verification gets stuck.

Step 7: Turn on two-factor authentication

Etsy requires two-factor authentication to protect your shop and your earnings. You can use an authenticator app, which Etsy recommends, or receive codes by SMS or phone call. An authenticator app keeps working if you change phone numbers or travel.

Step 8: Add your first listing and open the shop

Etsy needs at least one listing before you can open. Add your best product with complete details, then open the shop. But there's still plenty of work after that click. The sections below cover what to finish before you share your shop link anywhere.

Which Etsy setup choices are hard to change later?

Most things in an Etsy shop can be edited at any time. A few can't, or they cost you if you get them wrong. Decide these before you start.

SettingWhy it mattersWhat we recommend
Shop languageEtsy does not let you change it laterChoose the language you will use with buyers every day
Shop currencyA mismatch with your bank adds a 2.5% fee to salesMatch your bank account's currency from day one

How do you make a new Etsy storefront look trustworthy?

A new shop has no reviews, so buyers look for other signs that you're real and reliable. Your storefront supplies them. Finish these items in Shop Manager before you promote your shop:

  • Shop icon and banner. Use one consistent style and color palette. The icon appears small, so keep it simple and readable at thumbnail size.
  • About section. Write a short, true story in your own words: who you are, what you make or design, and how. Add a photo of you, your hands or your workspace. Buyers on Etsy like to know who is behind what they buy.
  • Shop announcement. One or two lines on what you sell and any current processing times.
  • Shop sections. Group listings the way a buyer browses, for example "Wedding signs" and "Home signs", not "Collection 1".
  • Policies. State processing time, shipping, returns and exchanges, and how personalization works. Clear policies reduce messages and disputes.

If you sell print on demand or work with any production partner, add them to your listings as Etsy's Creativity Standards require, with an accurate dispatch location. If you use AI to create designs, Etsy requires you to disclose that in the listing description.

How should you write your first Etsy listings?

Your first listings do two jobs: they appear in Etsy search, and they persuade the buyer who clicks. For each one:

  1. First photo: bright, sharp and showing the whole item. In search results, this is the only thing a buyer sees.
  2. More photos: detail, scale, color options, the item in use and, for personalized items, a finished personalized example. Etsy doesn't allow a blank or "Your Text Here" image as the first photo for personalized items.
  3. Title: start with what the item is, in the words a buyer would type, then add one or two important details.
  4. Tags: use all 13, as multi-word phrases that cover different searches, such as "custom pet portrait" rather than "pet".
  5. Category and attributes: choose the most specific category and fill in every attribute that is true, so filtered searches can find you.
  6. Description: answer size, materials, personalization, processing time and delivery in the first few lines.
  7. Price: check it covers your costs and Etsy's fees, and compare it with similar listings that sell.

Aim for a small, focused range at launch. Several well-researched listings in one niche tell buyers and Etsy what your shop is about far better than many rushed listings across unrelated products.

How should you set shipping and processing times?

Shipping settings are easy to rush and expensive to get wrong. Create shipping profiles in Shop Manager rather than setting shipping listing by listing, so you can update many listings at once.

  • Processing time: set the time you can meet in your busiest week, not your quietest. Late dispatch hurts reviews more than a slightly longer promise.
  • Shipping prices: weigh and measure your packed item and check real postage costs. Remember Etsy's 6.5% transaction fee applies to shipping as well as the item price.
  • Destinations: only offer countries you can reach at a fair cost and within a reasonable time.
  • Digital products: no shipping profile is needed, but say clearly in the listing what files the buyer receives.

What does it cost to set up an Etsy shop?

A standard Etsy shop has no monthly fee. You pay a one-time setup fee where it applies, then fees as you list and sell. For a US seller:

FeeAmountWhen
Setup feeOne-time, varies by locationWhen you open the shop
Listing fee$0.20 per listingWhen you publish or renew; listings last 4 months
Transaction fee6.5% of item price, shipping and gift wrapEach sale
Payment processing3% + $0.25 per order (US)Each sale through Etsy Payments
Currency conversion2.5%Only if your listing currency differs from your bank's

For example, a $30 order (a $25 item plus $5 shipping) costs a US seller $0.20 to list, $1.95 in transaction fees and $1.15 in processing, so $3.30 in Etsy fees before your product and postage costs. Processing rates differ outside the US, for example 4% + 0.20 GBP in the UK and 6.5% + 0.30 USD in Pakistan.

What are the most common Etsy shop setup mistakes?

  1. A shop currency that differs from the bank currency, which adds a 2.5% fee to every sale.
  2. An ID name that doesn't match the bank account, which stalls identity verification.
  3. Pricing before counting fees, especially forgetting that the transaction fee also applies to shipping.
  4. Empty tags, attributes or sections, which keep listings out of searches they could appear in.
  5. Blank About section and policies, which make a new shop look untrustworthy.
  6. Copying another seller's photos, text or designs, which breaks Etsy's rules and can get listings removed.
  7. Promising processing times you can't keep once orders start arriving.

Use this Etsy shop setup checklist as a final pass:

  • Shop language, country and currency set, with currency matching your bank.
  • Shop name chosen and checked against existing brands and trademarks.
  • Bank account, billing card and seller type added.
  • Identity verification submitted and two-factor authentication on.
  • Shop icon, banner, announcement and About section complete, with a real photo.
  • Processing, shipping, returns and personalization policies written.
  • Shop sections created for each product group.
  • Production partners and any AI use disclosed where they apply.
  • Each listing has a strong first photo, all 13 tags, every true attribute and a clear description.
  • Prices checked against Etsy's fees and against similar listings.

Key takeaways

  • Set up on a desktop browser with your ID, bank account, card and first listing ready.
  • Your shop language can't be changed later, and your currency should match your bank to avoid a 2.5% fee.
  • Your ID name must match your bank account name for verification to pass.
  • Opening the shop is the start: finish the storefront, policies and shipping profiles before you promote it.
  • A small range of complete, well-researched listings beats a large range of rushed ones.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to set up an Etsy shop?

The setup screens take about an hour if your ID, bank details and first listing are ready. Identity verification can take longer, and the storefront and listings usually take a few more sessions to finish well.

Can I set up an Etsy shop on my phone?

Etsy asks you to set up the shop in a desktop web browser. After that, you can manage orders, messages and listings in the Etsy Seller app.

Do I need a business to open an Etsy shop?

No. You can sell as an individual, which Etsy treats as a sole proprietorship. Etsy doesn't require a business license, but you must follow the laws that apply to small online businesses where you live.

Can I change my Etsy shop name later?

Yes, Etsy lets you change your shop name after the shop is open. It's still best to choose a name you're happy to keep, because buyers will recognize you by it.

Is it free to open an Etsy shop?

There is no monthly fee for a standard shop, but Etsy may charge a one-time setup fee that varies by location, plus $0.20 per listing and fees on each sale.
