How to Sell on Etsy: A Beginner’s Guide (2026)

How to sell on Etsy in 2026: what you need, how to open your shop, the 8 steps to your first sales, fees by country and the mistakes to avoid.

By Stallion's TeamReviewed by Rabeel Minhas~10 min read

In short: To sell on Etsy, create an Etsy account, open a shop at etsy.com/sell, connect a bank account and a card, verify your identity, pay the one-time setup fee and publish at least one listing. The selling itself is the harder part: choose a product people already search for, price it after Etsy's fees, list it with clear photos and buyer-friendly keywords, and improve your listings from your Stats. Most shops that succeed treat the first 90 days as a test-and-improve period, not a one-time launch.

Opening an Etsy shop takes an evening. Building one that sells takes a plan. Most guides stop at the sign-up screens, so new sellers end up with a shop that's technically open but never gets found. Here you'll get both halves: the exact steps to start selling on Etsy, and the choices that decide whether anyone buys.

Is it worth selling on Etsy in 2026?

For the right product, yes. Etsy's strength is that buyers arrive already searching for something specific: a personalized gift, a print for a nursery, a planner for a teacher, a ring in a particular style. You don't have to build an audience from zero before your first sale, because Etsy search brings shoppers to your listings if they match what people type.

Etsy suits you if:

  • You sell something you made, designed or carefully selected, which is what Etsy's Creativity Standards require.
  • Your product has a clear buyer and a clear reason to buy, such as a gift, an occasion, a hobby or a job.
  • You're willing to spend time on research, photos and listing copy, not only on making the product.

Etsy is a poor fit for reselling ready-made products from wholesalers. It isn't allowed, and those listings get removed.

Seven things to have ready before you open your Etsy shop.

What do you need before you start selling on Etsy?

Have these ready before you click "Get started". That way you won't have to stop halfway through setup.

  • A desktop or laptop browser. Etsy asks you to set up the shop on the web. You can manage it from the Etsy Seller app afterwards.
  • An Etsy account with a profile picture and a short bio.
  • A bank account in a country where Etsy Payments is available, so Etsy can pay you.
  • A debit or credit card for Etsy's bills, such as listing fees and ads.
  • A valid government ID whose name matches your bank account. Etsy uses a partner called Persona to check your ID against a selfie.
  • A phone or authenticator app for two-factor authentication, which Etsy requires.
  • At least one listing ready to publish: photos, a title, a description and a price.

How to sell on Etsy in 8 steps

Here's the order we follow with clients. Steps 1 to 3 happen before you open the shop, and they matter most.

Eight steps to sell on Etsy in three phases: choose a model, check demand, do the numbers, open your shop, set up the storefront, create listings, launch, then track and grow
How to sell on Etsy in eight steps, grouped into three phases.

1. Choose your business model

Decide how your products will be made: by you (handmade), by a print partner (print on demand), as downloadable files (digital products), or by a manufacturer to your own design (private label). This choice sets your startup cost, your margins and how your days will look. Our guide to Etsy business models compares all four.

2. Pick a niche and check demand

A niche is a specific buyer plus a specific need. "Mugs" is a product. "Retirement gifts for nurses" is a niche. To check demand without paid tools:

  • Type your idea into Etsy's search bar and note the autocomplete suggestions. Those are real searches.
  • Open the top listings and look at their review counts and dates. Recent reviews on several listings mean the product is selling now.
  • Look for gaps: listings with weak photos, vague titles or missing options you could do better.
  • Check seasonality in Google Trends, so you know whether demand peaks before a holiday.

3. Work out your numbers

Before you make anything, check that the price buyers accept leaves you a profit after product cost, shipping and Etsy's fees. A product that only works at a price nobody pays is a hobby, not a business. The fee table further down shows what Etsy charges.

4. Open your Etsy shop

Go to etsy.com/sell and select Get started. Etsy then walks you through:

  1. Shop preferences: language, country and currency. You can't change the shop language later, and pricing in a different currency from your bank adds conversion fees.
  2. Shop name: 4 to 20 characters, no spaces or special characters, not already taken and not someone else's trademark. You can change it after opening.
  3. Payments and billing: connect your bank account, choose whether you sell as an individual or an incorporated business, and add a card.
  4. Setup fee: a one-time, non-refundable fee that Etsy shows under "Total due now" before you confirm. The amount depends on where you are.
  5. Identity check: a photo of your ID and a selfie, reviewed through Persona.
  6. Two-factor authentication: an authenticator app (Etsy's recommendation), SMS or a phone call.

5. Set up your storefront

Buyers check your shop before they buy from someone new. Add a banner and shop icon that match your products, a short About section in your own words, and clear policies for processing time, shipping, returns and personalization. Set processing times you can keep in your busiest week, not your quietest.

6. Create listings that get found and chosen

A listing has two jobs: appear in search, and convince the buyer once they click. For both:

  • Photos: a bright, sharp first photo that shows the whole item, then detail, scale and in-use shots. Use most of your photo slots, and add a short video if it helps.
  • Title: lead with what the item is, in the words buyers type, then one or two key details.
  • Tags: use all 13, as multi-word phrases that cover different searches.
  • Attributes and category: fill in every attribute that is true, so filtered searches can find you.
  • Description: answer size, materials, personalization and delivery in the first lines.
  • Shipping profile: realistic costs and delivery times for each country you ship to.

7. Launch and win your first sales

Start with enough listings for Etsy and buyers to judge your shop. Ten well-researched listings in one niche usually beat fifty rushed ones across five. Then:

  • Share your listings where your buyers already spend time, such as Pinterest for home decor, weddings and gifts.
  • Test Etsy Ads with a small daily budget on listings that already get views and favorites, not on brand-new ones.
  • Pack every order carefully and message buyers if anything is delayed. Early reviews shape how new buyers see you.

Never buy reviews or ask friends to leave them. Etsy's policies prohibit manipulating reviews, and it can suspend shops that do. Earn reviews through good products, fast replies and on-time dispatch.

8. Track, improve and scale

Your Shop Manager Stats show which searches bring visits and which listings get clicks but no sales. Check them every week:

  • Listing gets views but no clicks? Improve the first photo and the title.
  • Gets clicks but no sales? Check the price, shipping cost, reviews and description.
  • Selling well? Add variations, related products and seasonal versions.

Change one thing at a time on your best listings, so you can see what helped.

How much does it cost to sell on Etsy?

There's no monthly fee for a standard shop. You pay a one-time setup fee, then fees as you list and sell:

FeeAmountWhen
Setup feeOne-time, varies by locationWhen you open the shop
Listing fee$0.20 per listingWhen you publish or renew; each listing lasts 4 months
Transaction fee6.5% of the order total, including shippingEvery sale
Payment processingUS: 3% + $0.25 per order. UK: 4% + £0.20. Pakistan: 6.5% + $0.30Every sale through Etsy Payments; rate depends on your bank's country
Offsite Ads15%, or 12% once you pass $10,000 in sales in 12 months, capped at $100 per orderOnly on sales from Etsy's ads on other sites
Currency conversion2.5%Only if your listing currency differs from your bank's

Example for a US seller: a $30 order (a $25 item plus $5 shipping) costs $0.20 to list, $1.95 in transaction fees and $1.15 in processing. That's $3.30 in Etsy fees, before your own product and postage costs. Our Etsy shop setup and launch service includes pricing that covers these fees.

Can you sell on Etsy from outside the US?

Yes, if your bank account is in a country where Etsy Payments is available. Etsy lists processing rates for dozens of countries, from the UK and Canada to Pakistan, India and the UAE. Three things change when you sell from outside the US:

  • Processing fees differ by country, as the table above shows.
  • Shipping to US buyers can be slow and expensive for physical products. Print on demand partners with US production, or digital products, avoid that problem.
  • Taxes and extra fees may apply, such as VAT on Etsy's fees in some countries, or a regulatory operating fee in others.

Can you sell on Etsy without inventory?

Yes, in two ways Etsy allows. With print on demand, your original designs are printed and shipped by a production partner only after an order. With digital products, buyers download a file and nothing is shipped at all. In both cases the design must be your own work, and print partners must be disclosed in your listings.

How long does it take to get your first sale on Etsy?

There's no fixed timeline. Some shops sell in the first week, others take months. The biggest factors are in your hands: how specific your niche is, how many well-made listings you have, and how good your photos and titles are. Plan for 90 days of listing, checking Stats and improving before you judge the shop.

What mistakes do new Etsy sellers make?

  • Starting with the product, not the buyer. Know who buys and why before you make anything.
  • Underpricing. Prices that ignore fees and your time lead to burnout, not growth.
  • Using designs you don't own. Brand names, characters and song lyrics get listings removed and can close a shop.
  • Weak first photos. In search results, the first photo is the only thing buyers see.
  • Buying reviews or traffic. It breaks Etsy's rules and puts the whole shop at risk.
  • Quitting after a few weeks. Etsy rewards shops that keep improving their listings.

Key takeaways

  • Opening an Etsy shop needs an account, a bank account in an Etsy Payments country, a card, an ID check, two-factor authentication, the setup fee and one listing.
  • Choose your business model, niche and prices before you open the shop.
  • US sellers pay $0.20 per listing, 6.5% per transaction and 3% + $0.25 processing. Other countries have their own processing rates.
  • Photos, titles, tags and attributes decide whether you're found and chosen.
  • Give a new shop 90 days of steady improvement before judging it.

Etsy doesn't require one. You still have to follow the laws that apply to small online businesses where you live, so check with a qualified professional if you're unsure.
