Etsy Business Models: POD, Digital, Private Label or Handmade?

Compare the four Etsy business models: print on demand, digital products, private label and handmade. What Etsy allows, startup costs and how to choose yours.

In short: There are four main Etsy business models. With print on demand, you design products and a partner prints and ships them. With digital products, you sell files that buyers download. With private label, a manufacturer makes products to your own design under your brand. With handmade, you make each item yourself. Etsy allows all four, as long as the product comes from your own design or your own hands. The right one depends on your budget, your skills and how much time each order can take.

Last updated: 27 October 2026. Etsy's rules in this guide are checked against Etsy's Creativity Standards (last updated by Etsy on 10 June 2025) and its Fees & Payments Policy.

Most people who contact us already have a product in mind: t-shirts, a planner, a skincare line, candles. The question underneath is usually bigger. How will this shop actually run day to day? Who makes the product? Who ships it? Where does the money go before any profit is left? That's what a business model answers. Pick it early and you'll save yourself a lot of rework later.

Below, we walk through each model in plain terms: what Etsy allows, what it costs to start and run, and how to pick the one that fits you.

What business models does Etsy allow?

Etsy doesn't sell everything. Its Creativity Standards say every item needs a "human touch", and they sort allowed items into four groups:

  • Made by a seller: items you make by hand or with your own tools, such as a laser cutter, 3D printer or Cricut machine.
  • Designed by a seller: your original designs, either produced by a third party (a production partner) or sold as a digital download.
  • Handpicked by a seller: vintage items that are at least 20 years old, items from nature, and themed gift baskets you curate yourself.
  • Sourced by a seller: craft supplies, party supplies, and items personalized with the buyer's own text or image.

The four business models in this guide fit into the first two groups. One rule matters more than any other: Etsy does not allow you to resell ready-made products you did not make or design. A product bought from a wholesaler and relisted as-is will be removed, whatever business model you call it.

What is print on demand on Etsy?

Print on demand (POD) means you create the design and a production partner prints it onto a blank product only after someone orders it. The partner then packs the order and ships it to your buyer. You never hold stock.

A typical POD order on Etsy works like this:

  1. A buyer orders your design on a hoodie in your Etsy shop.
  2. The order passes to your print partner, usually through an app connected to your shop.
  3. The partner prints the hoodie, packs it and ships it with tracking.
  4. Etsy pays you the sale price minus its fees, and your partner charges you for the product and shipping.

What Etsy requires: POD items count as "designed by a seller". The design must be your own, and you must disclose the production partner in your shop and listings, including where the item ships from.

Where POD works well: designs built for a clear audience, such as a hobby, a profession, a pet breed, a hometown or a life event. A teacher, a nurse or a fan of a niche hobby will buy a design that speaks to them, even when the blank product is ordinary.

What to watch:

  • Thin margins. The partner's base price and shipping come out of every sale, before Etsy's fees. POD pricing needs real arithmetic, not a guess.
  • Quality you don't control. Late or faulty prints still end up in your shop reviews. Order samples before you list.
  • Heavy competition. Starting is cheap, so popular categories such as funny t-shirts and mugs are crowded. A specific audience beats a broad one.
  • Intellectual property. Designs that use brand names, characters, sports teams or song lyrics get removed and can get a shop suspended.

Our Etsy print on demand service covers niche research, product choice and listings for POD shops.

What are digital products on Etsy?

Digital products are files the buyer downloads after paying: printable wall art, planners, templates, SVG cut files, invitations, worksheets, spreadsheets. Etsy delivers the file automatically, so there's nothing to make, pack or ship.

What Etsy requires: digital downloads count as "designed by a seller", so the file must be your original work. A bundle, scan or PDF of someone else's work isn't allowed. If you used AI to create the item, you must say so in the listing description. AI prompt bundles aren't allowed either.

Where digital works well: buyers who need something useful quickly. Teachers want classroom resources, small businesses want templates, and people planning events want invitations and signs. A digital product that solves a specific job sells better than a generic "aesthetic" design.

What to watch:

  • Low prices. Many digital items sell for a few dollars, so you need volume, bundles or higher-value products.
  • Saturation. Because it's easy to start, you'll find lots of near-identical listings. Quality, clear previews and good instructions are how you stand out.
  • Support after the sale. Buyers will message you when a file won't open or print correctly. Include clear instructions and file formats.
  • Copying. Your files can be shared without permission. A clear license and good branding help, but you can't prevent it completely.

What is private label on Etsy?

Private label means a manufacturer produces a product for you, and you sell it under your own brand name. Think skincare, candles, jewelry, bags or home goods with your label, your packaging and your story.

On Etsy, private label only works in one form. The product has to be your own design or made to your own specification, and the manufacturer must be disclosed as your production partner. Etsy's own example is a dress designed by a seller and reproduced at scale by a production partner. Choosing a stock product from a supplier's catalog and adding your logo doesn't meet that standard.

Where private label works well: sellers who want to build a real brand with a consistent product, better margins per sale and room to grow beyond Etsy later.

What to watch:

  • Upfront investment. Samples, minimum order quantities, packaging and inventory usually need money before your first sale.
  • Stock and shipping. You or a fulfillment service store the stock and ship orders.
  • Product rules. Cosmetics, candles and children's products can carry extra safety and labeling rules. Check them for every country you sell to.
  • Supplier risk. Your quality and delivery times depend on the manufacturer, so test samples carefully and keep written specifications.

What about handmade?

Handmade is the model Etsy started with: you make the product yourself, by hand or with tools in your own workspace. Etsy counts items produced at home with computerized tools such as a laser cutter or 3D printer as "made by a seller" too, as long as they come from your own design.

Handmade gives you full control over quality and the strongest story to tell buyers. The limit is time. Every order needs your hours, so growth stops at the number of items you can make. Many handmade sellers add a second model later, for example a potter selling prints of their glaze patterns, or an illustrator selling originals alongside POD prints.

These are general patterns, not promises. Your real costs and margins depend on your product, your suppliers and your prices, so do the numbers for your own idea before you commit.

Which Etsy business model is right for you?

Answer these four questions honestly. They usually point to one model quickly.

  1. How much can you invest before your first sale? If the answer is very little, start with print on demand or digital products. Private label needs money for samples, stock and packaging.
  2. Do you want to touch physical products? If you'd rather never pack a parcel, choose digital or POD. If you enjoy making things and controlling quality, consider handmade or private label.
  3. What is your strongest skill? Design and illustration suit POD and digital products. Teaching or organizing knowledge suits digital. Product development and branding suit private label. A craft skill suits handmade.
  4. How do you want the shop to grow? Digital and POD can grow by adding listings. Private label grows through a stronger brand and repeat buyers. Handmade grows slowly unless you hire help.

A quick way to narrow down your options. Your product idea and skills still decide the final choice.

One example: a graphic designer with a small budget and a full-time job usually does best with digital products or POD. They can build listings in the evenings and never handle stock. A founder with a tested skincare formula and some capital is a private label case. They need a manufacturer, compliant labels and a brand that earns repeat orders.

What are the first steps for each model?

Once you've picked a model, start here. Each list follows the order we'd work through it with a client.

Print on demand

  1. Pick one specific audience and list ten design ideas for them.
  2. Choose a print partner that integrates with Etsy and order samples of your top two products.
  3. Check every design for trademarks before you list it.
  4. Work out your price from the partner's base cost, shipping and Etsy's fees.
  5. Launch ten listings, then add more based on what gets views.

Digital products

  1. Choose a buyer and the job your file does for them, such as a lesson plan or a wedding sign.
  2. Create the product, a clear preview image set and a short instruction file.
  3. Test that every file opens and prints correctly on a phone and a computer.
  4. Write a simple license that says how buyers may use the file.
  5. Launch, then build a bundle around your best seller.

Private label

  1. Validate demand on Etsy before you contact any manufacturer.
  2. Write a product specification and request samples from two or three suppliers.
  3. Check the safety and labeling rules for your product and every country you ship to.
  4. Design your brand, labels and packaging.
  5. Order a small first batch, list it with your production partner disclosed, and reorder from real sales data.

Handmade

  1. Time how long one item takes to make, pack and ship.
  2. Price it to cover materials, your hours, Etsy's fees and a profit.
  3. Set a realistic processing time you can keep in busy seasons.
  4. Photograph the finished item well, in natural light.
  5. Decide early which tasks you could hand to a helper or a production partner later.

Can you combine business models in one Etsy shop?

Yes. Etsy lets one shop sell items from different categories, as long as each listing follows the rules for its own type. Combinations that often make sense:

  • Digital and POD: sell a design as a printable download, and as a framed print or poster made by your POD partner.
  • Handmade and POD: sell original artwork and offer prints or merchandise of the same work.
  • Private label and digital: a planner brand can sell printed planners alongside digital versions.

Keep each listing clear about what the buyer receives, and disclose production partners wherever you use them. Buyers who expect a physical item and receive a file leave bad reviews quickly.

What mistakes do new sellers make when choosing a model?

  • Picking a model because it sounds passive. No model runs itself. POD and digital still need research, design, listings and customer service.
  • Calling reselling "private label". Adding a logo to a catalog product doesn't make it your design in Etsy's eyes.
  • Skipping the margin maths. Work out what's left after the product cost, shipping, Etsy's transaction fee of 6.5% and payment processing, before you choose a price.
  • Using designs you don't own. Trademarked phrases, characters and fan art are the fastest way to lose listings or the whole shop.
  • Choosing a product before a buyer. A model works when a specific group of buyers wants what you make. Start with who buys, then choose how to make it.

Key takeaways

  • Etsy's four main business models are print on demand, digital products, private label and handmade.
  • Every Etsy item must be made by you, designed by you, handpicked by you or sourced as a craft or party supply. Reselling ready-made goods is not allowed.
  • POD and digital products cost the least to start. Private label needs the most money but can give the strongest brand and margins. Handmade is limited by your time.
  • Production partners must be disclosed, and items created with AI must be labeled as such in the listing.

Frequently asked questions

Is print on demand allowed on Etsy?

Yes. Etsy allows print on demand when the design is your original work and you disclose your production partner in your listings.

Can you sell private label products on Etsy?

Yes, if the product is made to your own original design or specification by a manufacturer you disclose as a production partner. Reselling a supplier's ready-made product with your logo added does not meet Etsy's Creativity Standards.

Which Etsy business model is cheapest to start?

Digital products and print on demand usually cost the least to start, because you don't buy stock. Expect to spend time on design and some money on samples or software.

Is dropshipping allowed on Etsy?

Not in the usual sense. Reselling items from a supplier that you didn't make or design is not allowed. Print on demand of your own designs is the permitted way to have a partner ship orders for you.

Do I need to say if I used AI?

Yes. Etsy requires you to disclose in the listing description when an item was created with the use of AI.
